Writing Assistant
UniFlow's Writing Assistant analyzes your writing and provides actionable feedback to improve clarity, style, and vocabulary. It includes grammar checking, AI-powered rewriting in multiple modes, and a humanization feature to ensure your writing sounds natural and authentic.
Accessing the Writing Assistant
The Writing Assistant is available inside the document editor:
- Open a document in the Document Editor
- The assistant panel appears on the right side of the editor
- Switch between tabs: Grammar, References, Rewrite, and Bypass
Grammar Check
The Grammar tab provides detailed analysis of your writing:
- Click Check Grammar in the Grammar tab
- The AI scans your entire document (or selected text)
- Issues are displayed in a list with:
- The problematic text highlighted
- A description of the issue
- A suggested correction
- The severity level (error, warning, suggestion)
Types of Issues Detected
- Spelling errors — Misspelled words with corrections
- Grammar mistakes — Subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, article usage
- Punctuation — Missing or misplaced commas, periods, semicolons
- Style suggestions — Wordiness, passive voice, unclear phrasing
- Vocabulary — More precise or academic word choices
Applying Corrections
Click on any grammar suggestion to apply the correction directly to your document. The original text is replaced with the suggested improvement.
AI Rewrite
The Rewrite tab offers four intelligent rewriting modes:
Academic Mode
Transforms your text into formal academic prose:
- Elevates vocabulary to scholarly standards
- Restructures sentences for clarity and precision
- Adds appropriate hedging language ("suggests", "indicates")
- Maintains the original meaning while improving sophistication
Best for: Research papers, essays, thesis drafts
Simplify Mode
Makes complex text easier to understand:
- Breaks long sentences into shorter ones
- Replaces jargon with plain language
- Improves readability without losing key information
- Targets a general audience reading level
Best for: Summaries, presentations, emails to non-experts
Expand Mode
Develops your ideas with more detail:
- Adds supporting explanations and examples
- Elaborates on key points
- Extends short paragraphs into fuller discussions
- Maintains your original argument and structure
Best for: Meeting word count requirements, developing outlines into full text
Translate Mode
Translates your text between English and Chinese:
- Maintains the tone and style of the original
- Handles academic terminology accurately
- Preserves formatting and structure
Best for: Multilingual assignments, understanding source materials
Using Rewrite
- Select text in the editor (or leave unselected to rewrite the entire document)
- Switch to the Rewrite tab
- Choose a rewriting mode (Academic, Simplify, Expand, Translate)
- Review the AI-generated result in the preview area
- Click Apply to replace the original text with the rewritten version
You can rewrite, review, and refine as many times as needed before applying.
Humanize
The Bypass tab provides text humanization — rewording AI-generated content so it reads naturally and avoids detection by AI content checkers.
How It Works
- Paste or select AI-generated text
- Click Humanize
- The AI rewrites the content to:
- Vary sentence structure and length
- Use more natural vocabulary patterns
- Add human-like imperfections and style variation
- Maintain the original meaning and accuracy
When to Use Humanize
- After using AI to generate a draft, humanize it before submitting
- When your writing unintentionally sounds too uniform or mechanical
- As a final polish step in your writing workflow
Note: Humanize is intended to help you produce natural-sounding writing. Always ensure your final submission represents your own understanding and effort. See your school's academic integrity policy for guidance on AI tool usage.
References & Snippets
The References tab helps you incorporate course materials into your writing:
- Browse available snippets from your synced course materials
- Click a snippet to insert it as a formatted blockquote
- The source attribution is automatically included
This is useful for:
- Citing lecture notes in an essay
- Referencing assignment instructions
- Quoting course readings
Writing Workflow
Here's a recommended workflow for producing polished academic writing:
- Draft — Write your first draft in the Document Editor, or generate a draft with UniMind
- Rewrite — Use Academic mode to elevate the language
- Grammar Check — Scan for errors and apply corrections
- Humanize — Run through humanization if the text was AI-assisted
- AI Shield — Verify the final text with AI Shield for detection scores
- Export — Export to DOCX or PDF for submission
Tips
- Select specific paragraphs rather than the whole document for more targeted rewriting
- Use Academic mode sparingly — Over-polished text can sound unnatural; aim for a balance
- Combine modes — Expand a short draft first, then use Academic to polish it
- Grammar check last — Run grammar check after all rewrites are complete
- Review before applying — Always read the AI's suggestion before replacing your text
